Signs A Board Needs Replacing

Some boards fail obviously and others just quietly stop being adequate, so it helps to know what to look for.

Ceramic rewirable fuses date a board immediately. They offer no earth leakage protection and can be rewired incorrectly with wire that defeats the protection entirely.

Missing safety switches are a real gap rather than a technicality. Circuit breakers protect the wiring, while safety switches protect the person touching the appliance, and RCBOs combine both on a single circuit.

A board with no spare capacity blocks anything new. Solar, air conditioning and car chargers all need their own circuits, and there has to be somewhere to put them, along with room for surge protection.

Scorch marks, warmth or a burning smell at the board need attention immediately. These indicate connections generating heat, which is a fire risk rather than a maintenance item.
